Joyce Marieb, Ph.D.
Chief Executive Officer joycemarieb@gsdba.org
Joyce Marieb, business woman par excellence and long-time advocate for civil rights, has been the Executive Director of the Greater San Diego Business Association (GSDBA) for six years. As San Diego’s LGBT Chamber of Commerce, 750 members strong, GSDBA works to support member businesses and advocates visibility and diversity throughout San Diego County. The second largest LGBT chamber in the country, GSDBA is the first to enter into a Community Partnership with the US Small Business Administration. In 2003 GSDBA received the Nicky Award for Community Organization of the Year. Joyce is working to make GSDBA the largest LGBT Chamber in the country. She believes that economic growth and civil rights go hand in hand. Money is power and power used for the good results in equality.
Before coming to GSDBA, Joyce held management positions in national corporations including the Southland Corporation, Holiday Inns of America and Hewlett-Packard.
With her partner, Linda Barufaldi, D. C., from 1978 - 1984 she co-owned and operated a small business in San Diego, The Amazon Sweet Shop, where not only was ice cream made and dispensed, but also feminist thought and political activities.
In addition to her business endeavors, Joyce is a former teacher, having taught in secondary schools and colleges, including Notre Dame University. She holds a master’s degree from Marquette University and a doctorate from Boston University in Religious and Philosophical Thought.
As a community leader in San Diego, Joyce served for 10 years on the Board of Directors of Stepping Stone. For three of those years she was President and instrumental in the start of the building project and capital campaign which resulted in the new, state-of-the-art, 2.5 million dollar recovery facility. She continues to support the work Stepping Stone does in offering needed drug and alcohol recovery services to the San Diego LGBT community. Joyce also served as Vice Chair of the Aids Walk Board that convened to insure the future of Aids Walk. Currently, she serves on the advisory board of the Public Affairs Department of The LGBT Center and on the LGBT Leadership Council. Additionally, she was recently appointed as the chair of the Western Regional Council on Chambers and Business Organizations for the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and serves as a member of Congressman Bob Filner’s LGBT Advisory Board.
